We find its use in the Byzantine years, in small and hollow pottery, on animal-shaped handles and elsewhere, with a mouthpiece, usually half-filled with water where it is used to make a sound. Some lutes produce a variety of notes (like the ocarina), others have no finger holes and thus always produce the same stereotyped note (like whistles). Ethnomusicology studies them with the same interest as other musical instruments.
